Pushing Values Around

May 25, 2022

I'm a pretty good color mixer. But every morning when I go into my studio the first thing I see is that the values in the painting I did the day before need to be pushed farther. It's not my fault, really.

It's nobody's fault. It's just the nature of oil paint to be influenced by each of the layers it holds. So to get anywhere near the correct values I need to paint them at least three times, but usually not more than four.

The first time is the trickiest because that's when I am trying to place each stroke correctly, working to begin turning the form and building out the value map.

So today I recorded the process, including the paints I used and how I added the medium. I know, it's not the Painting Best Practices- approved way to add medium to paint. If you want, add the medium to your paint. No worries.

This is a blatant attempt to get you to sign up.

And if you do, I promise not to be too boring or pedantic. So if you want, fill in the form below.
